Text description provided by the architects. Originally planned as a dedicated engineering center, KieranTimberlake worked with academic stakeholders to reprogram the project as a multi-purpose, cross-departmental campus resource that facilitates the curricular needs of the next generation of design leaders, builders and of entrepreneurs. Echoing Kieran Timberlake’s own rigorous research methods, the university and company conducted studies of every academic department on campus to compile a list of the institution’s key features and functions. The research outcome provided KieranTimberlake with the mandate to combine the two flexible spaces with fixed programming, where students from different disciplines and backgrounds can investigate, socialize, collaborate, and create.

Unique in size and scope for the university, the five-story facility has a prominent curtain wall of glass panels that undulate from flat panels in a chevron pattern, projecting gradually outwards. The movement and reflective pattern of the facade wraps continuously across most of the exterior walls, reflecting the agricultural history of the surrounding campus, including the historic Marston water tower, while framing fragmented open sky angles .

As with many aspects of KieranTimberlake-designed projects, the facade does more than spark curiosity about the activities within. From the start, the company leveraged the diverse skills of its in-house research group to simulate design iterations at the pace of the process. Simulations took into account mass, program distribution and facade geometry to optimize the building for passive rejection of solar heat gain without the use of shading, and to reduce energy consumption by one-third compared to a comparable reference building.

Inside the 146,000 square foot structure, the floor plan’s flexible loft-like spaces support a modern pedagogy focused on interdisciplinary inquiry through experimentation, pro-typing, and fabrication. While some spaces were deliberately built open and raw for future program development based on changing school and community needs, the use of concrete throughout was not simply a nod to the modern or “cutting edge” in its raw aesthetic, yet serves the dual purpose of providing a safe envelope for manufacturing spaces used for lapping materials such as wood, metal, plastic, glass, textiles, materials composites and electronics. The center’s generous floor plan also includes 13 meeting rooms, a cafe, an exhibition gallery, a step-a-torium (as the central staircase lounge is called), and coworking and business spaces. events.
