Let Selena Gomez in Only Murders In the Building be your fall style inspiration

There’s no shortage of New York style inspiration in the pop culture canon. There’s Carrie Bradshaw, in her John Galliano and Manolo Blahniks newspaper dress. Audrey Hepburn, in her little black dress and pearls in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Ali McGraw’s oh-so-seventies trench coats in A love story. But, I would humbly suggest another: Selena Gomez in Only murders in the building.

We first meet Gomez’s character, Mabel, as she walks down the street on the Upper West Side. She wears a canary sweater under a mustard faux fur coat, round sunglasses, plaid pants and a pair of lace-up boots. On his head? A yellow beanie and a pair of cherry red Beats headphones. (A key accessory, every New York woman knows, for fixing everything from construction noise to catcallers.)

Gomez wears a faux fur jacket and a cozy knit in the first episode of Only murders in the building.

As the show progresses, Mabel starts a true crime podcast about her neighbor’s murder with fellow residents Steve Martin and Martin Short. All the while she wears a outstanding array of fall pieces. There she is, stalking a suspect in green faux fur by Proenza Schouler, or touring an art gallery in a see-through Dries Van Noten trench coat. Around her building, the Arconia, she wears a range of chic knitwear from the classic black turtleneck to an Anglo-granny argyle.

Then there are the boots: flat, black and usually ankle-length, from Guiseppe Zanotti or Re/Done. (In season one, a shoe highlight was a muted yellow chelsea by Stella McCartney.)
