On September 29, 2019, the Wilpons still owned the Mets, Brodie van Waganen was making front office decisions and Mickey callaway was the manager of the team. It was also the last time Noah syndergaard threw a pitch for the Mets.
Almost two years to the day, with a new owner, manager and team president in place, and a Tommy Jean surgery 18 months behind him, Thor threw another pitch.
It was a 96 mph fastball in the middle of Miguel Rojas– a few ticks lower than his usual flaming throw, but good enough to beat the three hitters Syndergaard faced Tuesday night at Citi Field. He crossed out the first two, going over the letters on Rojas and dropping a change up and down to get Jazz Chisholm. Bryan de la Cruz was eliminated to end the first round of Syndergaard.
Thor’s return highlighted the Mets’ 2-1 win over the Marlins in Game 2 of the day’s doubles program. At least until the extra sleeves.

After win match 1 in the afternoon with the help of a dozen base runners, the Mets struggled to get someone out on base in Game 2 Trevor Rogers in four rounds. The first only came Javier Baez hit a single on the left with two outs in the fourth. (This extended his hitting streak to 12 games, and he has reached base safely in 21 straight games, extending a career-high.)
Jonathan villar opened the fifth with a double from Rogers, and Pillar Kevin knocked him home two hitters later to tie the game to one.
That’s all the Mets would score until the end of the ninth inning – extra innings in this timeline – when James mccann drawn a Patrick mazeika.
With Báez in third and an out, McCann dribbled a ball to the left of the pitcher’s mound. Báez rushed home, Anthony Bass couldn’t line him up cleanly and the Mets left him.

It was the fourth double of 14 the Mets have swept away this year. They separate the other 10.
The Marlins only pushed one point on the plate in all nine frames. He came on an imposing Jesus sanchez run home Trevor Williams. It was the first pitch that Williams threw in relief from Syndergaard. He settled in after that, however, and got six of his next 12 strikeouts. A few Marlins reached base above Williams four post-dinger frames, but none came to score.
Miguel Castro and Trevor May each delivered scoreless innings after the one in regular time, then Jeurys Familia and Brad the hand held the Marlins at bay in the eighth and ninth “extra” innings. Familia started her career with a first career: a pick off. The victim was a ghost runner Magneuris Sierra, who stepped too far from a second to unlock the extras.

Both teams’ four-game streak continues on Wednesday with Taijuan Walker (7-11, 4.57) on the mound for the Mets and Elieser Hernandez (1-3, 4.24) pitch for the Marlins.
This will likely be the last start of the year for Walker, who last gave the Red Sox six earned runs in just two innings. He allowed two homers on that start as his longball problems in the second half continued. He had only two starts out of 12 in the second half where he did not allow a home run. One of them was his debacle in the third inning in Pittsburgh coming out of the gate.
Walker will look to end the year strong in a season he must consider a success, regardless of Wednesday’s results. After pitching 67 1/3 innings from 2018 to 2020, Walker crossed the 150 innings mark with his last start and made it through the year without any shoulder or elbow injuries, which marred a game of his first half-dozen seasons. in the big ones.
Game player: Noah syndergaard
Thor is back, and it should be celebrated. His appearance today was exactly what you wanted to see after all the ups and downs of his Tommy John recovery. Originally thought to return in early June this season, Syndergaard faced a setback that pushed their schedule to the end of August. Then a diagnosis of COVID-19 pushed that even further, and its first pitch finally came in the last week of the year.
Syndergaard is a post-World Series free agent, so getting back into a major league game before hitting the market is as important to him as it is to the Mets at this point.
