Planners refuse Domino’s Forfar offer

Pizza giant Domino’s hopes of creating its first Forfar outlet have been stymied.

The takeaway and delivery chain wanted to turn a former shop on St James’s Road in the city into its latest Angus branch.

But the idea aroused a host of local objections.

And Angus Council planning officials have now rejected the bid under delegated authority.

What Domino has planned

The St James Road store was previously a busy Mace store.

It served Viewmount, Gallowshade and Glens housing estates.

But it has been closed for some time.

The Domino’s application was lodged with Angus Council by Glasgow-based Joup Property Ltd in December 2021.

It showed off the pizza company’s branding outside the store.

Interior plans included a double-stack oven and cutting table/warming rack towards the front of the store, with a public counter and customer waiting area.

An office, washing area, toilets and two stores were to be located at the rear of the building.

Local concerns

There were a number of local objections to the plan.

People living nearby said the street was already a busy road at all times of the day.

Although there is space outside the store, it was feared the take-out would add to parking and road safety issues.

And some residents have raised concerns about noise, litter and odors.

Resident Scott Monro said: ‘This is already an excessively busy road as traffic seems to be avoiding crossing the town center and using St James Road.

“It is used by a large number of semi-trailers and agricultural vehicles at all times of the day and night.

“This can cause blockages in an already busy street.

“There is not enough parking space at the site to accommodate the additional vehicles it will attract, both customers and delivery drivers.”

Domino’s has other Angus outlets in Arbroath and Montrose.

The company was asked to comment on Forfar’s refusal.

He could appeal the decision to the Board’s Development Management Review Committee.
