Of our 23rd bedroom on the ground floor of the Thompson Central Park Hotel in New York City, the sunset reflects off the elegant bay windows of the downtown Manhattan office buildings across the street, while that my husband and I pour each other two flutes of champagne, freshly delivered by room service. We toast while our 7-year-old son, Jonathan, swivels the swivel TV to face the living room of our suite, jumping onto the sea-foam green velvet sofa to start flicking through the channels, looking for cartoons.

It’s Friday night, and we’ve just checked into a cozy Studio King suite at the newly renovated boutique hotel, two blocks from the south end of Central Park, after taking the train from our home. in Westchester County. We’ve covered less than 20 miles – and my husband and I regularly work from offices in Manhattan – but it was an easy transition into stay mode, thanks to Thompson’s laid-back vibe and sleek, yet stylish feel. our bedroom fashion: shimmering brass fittings, wood accents and mid-century modern style fixtures, crisp Italian bed linens.

For 40 years, ownership of 119 W. 56e Street was occupied by the iconic Le Parker Meridien New York hotel, before it was acquired by the Hyatt brand in 2019. After a top-to-bottom renovation, the Thompson Central Park New York opened in the fall 2021. (Hyatt took over Thompson, a boutique hotel brand known for its sleek design, in 2018. Thompson Central Park New York is the third Thompson property in New York, but the first under the Thompson name.) More Recently, the 587-room property entered its final stages of renovation, with a newly expanded lobby connecting the 56th Street and 57th Street entrances. In addition to a massive skylight and eye-catching green canopy, the renovated lobby atrium is home to a new bar and restaurant, Parker’s, which will feature regular live jazz music.

While it’s easy to imagine businessmen in town for work or couples on a romantic weekend staying here, it’s also an ideal base for a family vacation in the Big Apple. Our suite was very spacious for two adults and a child, with a king size bed for us and a sofa bed in a separate living room for our son. And any kid is sure to be a fan of the hotel’s “secret” burger joint, Burger Joint, tucked down a hallway off the lobby. The no-frills place serves juicy burgers with all the fixins, fries, and milkshakes — and they even let you write on the walls, a perk our son raved about.

But if you’d rather eat in the comfort of your room, you can also choose to have everything on the Burger Joint menu delivered to you, in addition to the extensive room service main menu selections, including the treats from the Milk Bar.

There are also plenty of kid-friendly activities nearby. During our weekend getaway, we took Jonathan to CAMP, a two-story interactive toy store and craft workshop located in the shops of Columbus Circle. We also explored Central Park, hitting the playgrounds and the carousel. And with Times Square just 10 blocks south of the hotel, we decided to give Jonathan his first Broadway show, a matinee performance of Aladdin. After the show (a little hit with our son) we headed to the Nintendo store in Rockefeller Center (an even bigger hit with our son) and easily walked back to the Thompson from there.

Another great family amenity you’ll find at Thompson Central Park New York if you’re traveling with young children, in addition to cribs available on request: through October 1, 2022, the hotel is partnering with Bugaboo to offer guests free stroller service, with access to Bugaboo’s new Butterfly compact foldable strollers during their stay. Conclusion: We had a fantastic stay at the Thompson. If you are traveling with young children to New York, I highly recommend this as a base for all your big city adventures! Rooms currently start at $530.
