Wine glasses at your fingertips: take a getaway around Rutherglen without leaving the city

Taste your way to one of Victoria’s best wine regions without the road trip when Rutherglen in the City hits town next month.

Let’s face it, these are interesting times, and interstate travel can be a risky touch.

If you have itchy feet and fancy a wine-filled getaway, the good news is that the winemakers from Rutherglen are coming to see us!

Organized over two days in the picturesque area of Pialligo, Rutherglen in the city is back on August 7 and 8, with two tastings per day. The event is a chance to sample some of the best drops of the Northeastern Victorian wine region and stock up on bottles of your favorites.

There will be 15 retractable cellar doors at the event this year, all offering wine tastings, not to mention the chance to speak directly to the makers of these delicious wines. The wine is then available for purchase by the glass or by the bottle to take home.

The event has been taking place in Canberra for several years, first as Tastes of Two Regions, then as Rutherglen in the City. Like most events, they couldn’t take place last year, but winemaker Wendy Killeen of Rutherglen’s Stanton and Killeen Wines says she is excited to make the trip to Canberra once again this year.

“We always love coming to Canberra. We found that the Canberrans are big supporters of the Rutherglen wine country, ”says Wendy.

“Rutherglen is a very historic region, it has been around since the 1850s and all the cellars are owned by families. For Rutherglen in the City, all the families of the participating wineries agree, we do everything ourselves, so you actually meet the people behind the brand.

At the event, gourmet picnics and trays from Pialligo Estate will also be available for purchase, so you can find a beautiful lawn and have a relaxing picnic on the lawns.

If you want to dive deeper, there will also be a number of wine masterclasses, details of which are published closer to the event.

“The quality of our wines is fantastic, and we have a great variety in our offer, so I think there is something for everyone, crisp whites, alternative varieties, full-bodied chardonnays, full-bodied reds, Interesting rosés and those charming fortified ones that we are well known for, ”says Wendy.

“You can taste wine, buy a drink, buy food and then sit on the grass. It’s such a beautiful day, it’s like a big giant family picnic.
